Promise of Commons

Over 350 million rural poor across India depend on community forests, pastures, and water bodies, collectively known as Commons, for their livelihoods. Ecologically healthy Commons support these communities in meeting their basic needs of food, fodder, water, medicines, timber, etc. Commons and their ecosystem services are also vital to the growth, viability, and resilience of farming systems and other rural livelihoods, more so in the face of the unfolding climate crisis.

While there are enabling policies, programmes and legal frameworks at the national and state levels, several local communities still do not have rights over these Commons and cannot control or defend them.
This video throws light on the criticality of Commons, along with existing barriers and opportunities in the system to address Commons degradation, rural livelihood resilience, and the impacts of climate change. It also presents the strategies that will enable actors to shift the system to a new equilibrium, where Nature and People thrive.
